Whip-smart, hardworking, and on her way to an MBA, Chloe Mills has only one problem: her boss, Bennett Ryan. He's exacting, blunt, inconsiderate--and completely irresistible. A Beautiful Bastard.Bennett has returned to Chicago from France to take a vital role in his family's massive media business. He never expected that the assistant who'd been helping him from abroad was the gorgeous, innocently provocative--completely infuriating--creature he now has to see every day. Despite the rumors, he's never been one for a workplace hookup. But Chloe's so tempting he's willing to bend the rules--or outright smash them--if it means he can have her. All over the office. As their appetites for one another increase to a breaking point, Bennett and Chloe must decide exactly what they're willing to lose in order to win each other.Originally only available online as The Office by tby789--and garnering over 2 million reads on fanfiction sites--Beautiful Bastard has been extensively updated for re-release.
So when I first heard about this book it was being described as Twilight-meets-50 Shades of Grey-meets The Office. Well I like Twilight, I like 50 Shades of Grey, but I LOVE The Office. All I kept thinking was how the hell is The Office sexy?!?!?!
I was approved by Netgalley for an ARC of this book and I decided what better way to describe my feelings than by using inspiration from The Office.
Meet Bennett and Chloe:
Chloe Mills’s boss Bennett Ryan is the king of all douchebags. He is arrogant, cruel, condescending, offensive, and a bastard.
“Mr. Ryan was going to have my ass. I was twenty minutes late. As I experienced this morning, he hated late. “Late” was a word not found in the Bennett Ryan Dickhead Dictionary. Along with “heart,” “kindness,” “compassion,” “lunch break,” or “thank you.”
But he is also beautiful, hence the nickname Beautiful Bastard.
This book is told from duel POV and Bennett’s opinion of Chloe isn’t any better.
I appreciate that you got me coffee when you made your own, Miss Mills, but if I’d wanted mud to drink I would have scooped my mug through the garden soil this morning.
So all this hate and anger leads to the next logical step, hot office sex.
“How can I let my body react like this? I still wanted to slap him, but now, more than that, I wanted him to keep going.
and some more sex….
So of course throughout all this banging ten ways from Sunday they magically start falling in love.
“I was starting to see that this wasn’t just sex, and it wasn’t something just working out of my system. Sex was just the fastest route to the deeper possession that I needed. I was falling in love with her, and falling to fast and hard to easily find any footing.”
and then all hell breaks loose and
…and this is where I lose interest…
Now don’t get me wrong. I liked Beautiful Bastard. The banter was witty, the scenes were hot, and it held my interest enough for me to finish. But there was not much character development. Both characters are career driven, successful individuals but in terms of their relationship it jumps from hate to hate/lust to love. Yea, sure that happens. I guess I just wanted to see more of an evolution in their relationship.
I will read the sequel because I am curious to see what they changed from the original twi-fiction it was under, but overall I am just a little underwhelmed. If your looking for a steamy, witty book you can’t go wrong with Beautiful Bastard, but if your looking for an intense romance between two characters, well you might want to read something else.
