You read the reviews…You feel the excitement…You read the book….
…and you hate it.
But, this book was recommended by 9 out of 10 bloggers?! It was recommended by your favorite authors?! Everyone is SQUEE’ing and EEP’ing over the newest release and you’ve read it and don’t see what the fuss is about.
Why all the hype?
As a blogger, I would say that hype is a side effect of the job. We receive ARCs (advance review copies) in exchange for honest reviews <—I cannot stress HONEST enough, and when it comes time to share our thoughts and feelings, we do. We talk about it on our blogs, on our social media pages, in book groups, with friends etc. But what happens when after we’ve built up excitement over a book and it releases and you are unfazed by it?
As a reader?
As a reader, when I see over-enthusiastic posts about an upcoming release I get put off about reading it. Why? Because I have been burned way too many times by books that were mediocre, unoriginal, lacking in plot, lacking in editing, etc. and it makes me question why that book is being touted as thebestbookever. Do these reviewers have a hidden agenda? Are they friends with an author? Are they on their street-team?
Where is the line between sharing your love for a book and hyping the hell out of it? I won’t lie, when I love a book, I LOVE the book. I tell all my friends. I try to feature it on the blog besides just the standard review. I want everyone and their mother to read it. But I worry, does this enthusiasm come off as false? Does my own personal feelings towards a book conflict over your eventual reaction? Is there a way for my feelings as a reader and my duties as a blogger to coexist?
Let’s talk it out.
