I can’t believe the first month of 2015 is gone and passed. January was kind of a blah month here at My Book Muse so I’m ok with moving forward to February. Let’s recap the past month and get a sneak peak at what to expect next!
This might possibly be the saddest review list ever. More on why that is coming up!

I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
Jaxon is the guy she’s supposed to avoid. K.C. is the girl he won’t let get away....
K. C. Carter has always followed the rules—until this year, when a mistake leaves her the talk of her college campus and her carefully arranged life comes crashing to a halt. Now she’s stuck in her small hometown for the summer to complete her court-ordered community service, and to make matters worse, trouble is living right next door.
Jaxon Trent is the worst kind of temptation and exactly what K.C. was supposed to stay away from in high school. But he never forgot her. She was the one girl who wouldn’t give him the time of day and the only one to ever say no. Fate has brought K.C. back into his life—except what he thought was a great twist of luck turns out to be too close for comfort. As they grow closer, he discovers that convincing K.C. to get out from her mother’s shadow is hard, but revealing the darkest parts of his soul is nearly impossible.
Penelope managed to do it again! I am in love with her characters, her writing, pretty much everything. Jax and K.C.’s story was well worth the wait!
January can be described as the…
January was a rough month for me. It might have to do with everything that happened last month (holidays, hospital, and the anniversary of my grandfather’s death) but I just wasn’t feeling it. Not only is this the lightest amount of books I have read in years, but everything I have read has just been meh; nothing particularly bad but nothing memorable. I do have some reviews that will go live in the next week but I have yet to read my first 5 star book of the year.
The DNF Report
Inspired by Black Heart Reviews DNF Journals, The DNF Report is my way to talk about books I’ve DNF’d each month without wanting to write a formal review.
Books I DNF’d this past month:
I wanted to love this but I just couldn’t take the heroine, Anna. She is a whiny and I’m just so tired of that character trait in books lately. Blah. I also wasn’t aware that this is a trilogy based on the same couple. Normally I love that but I couldn’t imagine going forward another two books without feeling frustrated by Anna.
I LOVE student/teacher books. It’s one of my favorite troupes but it’s also one that I judge more than others. Sadly, I had to DNF this one around 30%. My problems were how inconsistent the characters were (especially Reed. He obsesses over Auburn in the first few chapters and then once something happens he acts like it shouldn’t, even though he gave no inclination of that in his internal musings), the scenes were choppy and confusing, especially when it comes to transitioning from one scene to the next. Also, I’m still confused by the timeline and age of Auburn. Overall, I knew all these little things would have me going batty if I went forward.
This is clearly a situation of “it’s not you, it’s me”. I think I’m just over the rockstar troupe in general because I enjoyed the writing and this felt like a more realistic storyline. I gave up around 40% because it was just not holding my interest. I actually think that this is something a lot of my friends would enjoy, I just couldn’t get into it.
Again, I think I’m just not in the mood for this kind of book. I think it’s a bad sign if you forget about the book you were reading and this is what happened after I set this one aside. I had no problem with the writing or the pace but it wasn’t grabbing my attention. Out of all the DNF’s I’ve had this month this is one that I might come back to when I’m in the mood for a lighter read.
I haven’t really read a menage book I haven’t liked but sadly Three Two One did nothing for me in the short time I started reading it. I’m not someone that is easily offended or put off by dark romances but the way JD and Ark treat Blue in the beginning kind of grossed me out. I just am not into the whole View Spoiler »porn job storyline « Hide Spoiler and how they approach women for it, especially Blue. I can’t imagine my feelings changing over the course of the story so I am setting this one down.
I started a new feature to keep track of what is trending in the book community throughout the year. The first trend of the year that I have noticed is Collaborative Fiction. Are you a fan of books co-authored or is that a trend you would like to see end?
Discussion posts are my favorite because I love hearing everyone’s opinions. This month we talked about the difference between being a reviewer vs. a promotor and if you have ever had to defend a book you enjoyed. Make sure you check out the posts below and let me know where you stand on both those topics.
Stacking the Shelves
Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, may it be physical or virtual. This means you can include books you buy in physical store or online, books you borrow from friends or the library, review books, gifts and of course ebooks! Hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.
I have decided that I will only post a monthly StS post instead of one weekly. The month of January was awesome when it came to review books.
Thank you Gallery Books, Berkley Romance, St. Martin’s Griffin, Macmillan Teen, Bloomsbury Kids, and Penguin Teen for the lovely arcs!

Let’s Show Some Love…
Each month I want to show my love to some fellow bloggers. This month I’m showing love to…
Nereyda @ Mostly YA Book Obsessed
Nereyda is an awesome blogger that I was fortunate to discover through some mutual friends we have. Besides her amazing reviews (seriously, this girl is on fire!) she also brings a few features to the book community that are not only super fun but very unique. Some of my favorite features are:
What’s coming in February?
I’m hoping that my blogging blues will come to an end so I can read and review some books! I am pretty excited by a few that I have read and a few that are coming.
Max Stella is my favorite bastard in the series. He is a smooth dirty talker with a heart of gold. Seriously, this is one novella that is worth the read!
Not only is the one of the books featured in my new feature #Trending, but it’s two authors that can do no wrong in my eyes.
What do you get when you mix young adult, a dystopian society and reality tv? Something I want to read!
What was your favorite January releases? What are you looking forward to in February?
