A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is...I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just...mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants to fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.
Women brought too much drama, too much press, and too damned much perfume.
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is the Queen. End of. She is one of my all-time favorites. Whenever I am in the need of an emotionally satisfying romance I turn to her books. In fact, this was one of the only books that I was determined to get when I was at BEA back in May. I have loved almost everything she has put out and First Star I See Tonight is no exception.
Two weeks of mind-blowing sex was perfect. But as she wrapped herself in an oversized bath towel, a shadow fell over one corner of her heart, a premonition that, when the sex stopped, she’d have lost a friend. One of the best friends she’d ever had.
First Star I See Tonight follows newly retired Cooper Graham and tomboy detective Dove Piper. The two of them meet under some pretty hilarious and unique circumstances and it that kind of shapes the way they interact with each other. Coop is kind of a jerk and Dove is a little bit of a ball-buster. On paper, the odds of them as a lovers, let alone a couple, is bizarre. But between a situation that has Dove working for Coop, the time they spend together is highly charged that is becomes almost impossible for them to ignore their attraction to one another. Yet again, SEP, gives us a loveable and strong heroine that manages to ensnare our reluctant hero and the results are off the charts sexy, sweet, and so much fun.
It was at that moment the mist had finally cleared, and his brain had comprehended what his heart had been trying to tell him for weeks–he loved Piper Dove. She was part of him. His laughter, his comfort.
For a SEP novel, especially one in her Chicago Stars series, First Star I See Tonight is a solid 4 star. I absolutely adored both Dove and Cooper. They were such a great example of chemistry at its finest. I do wish the romance between them was as fleshed out as the lust was. But Dove’s personality really shined through. I don’t think I’m a reader that is too critical of heroines, but there is always something special about SEP’s heroines. They are usually brave, headstrong, funny, and so full of heart. Dove was especially one of my favorites. I very much look forward to what Susan puts out next!
