When Emily Wayborn goes home to visit her mom while on hiatus from her hit TV show, she receives a voicemail from her former best friend, Amber. Though the two were once notorious party girls, they haven't spoken in years. Although the message might sound benign to anyone else, Amber uses a safe word that Emily recognizes, a word they always used to get out of sticky situations during their wild days. And what's more chilling than the voicemail: it turns out that Amber has gone missing.
Determined to track down her friend, Emily follows a chain of clues that lead her to the enigmatic billionaire Reeve Sallis, a hotelier known for his shady dealings and play boy reputation. Now, in order to find Amber, Emily must seduce Reeve to learn his secrets and discover the whereabouts of her friend. But as she finds herself more entangled with him, she finds she's drawn to Reeve for more than just his connection to Amber, despite her growing fear that he may be the enemy. When she's forced to choose where her loyalty lies, how will she decide between saving Amber and saving her heart?
“I was Emily Wayborn, formerly Emily Barnes, and no one else. There was no space for Amber in the syllables he uttered.”
It’s not very often that I find myself so enthralled with a story that I fail to take notes, highlight quotes, or just take a breather. But Laurelin Paige’s First Touch had me failing to do all three. In fact, I ended up immediately re-reading after that brutal cliffhanger because I could not leave that world and needed to properly take notes/highlight my favorite parts. First Touch was the perfect blend of complex characters, deliciously dark erotica, and suspense that leaves you on the edge of your seat.
“He would have me. He would fuck me. He would bring me into his world.”
Now I’m not into paraphrasing what the story is about (you can read the synopsis for that) but I’m all about telling you why this story worked for me. While dark storylines have been all the rage the past few years, very few have managed to get them right. Some are way too dark for me and I’m not one that has triggers or subjects that are off limits. I mean some of this plot points and twists are just TOO much. First Touch breathes life into why I fell in love with romantic suspense, BDSM, and dark storylines to begin with. Laurelin managed to put a refreshing spin on some literary elements that have been over-utilized in the past few years.
“For good or bad, all roads led back to him. Perhaps that’s what it meant to really be his.”
One of the strongest elements of this story, besides the fascinating and often times toxic friendship between Emily and Amber that fuels the bulk of this story, is the downright delicious moments between Emily and Reeve. Sure, he’s a billionaire bad boy yada yada yada, but what makes him so damn appealing is how he handles himself. There is a cat and mouse quality to how he interacts with Emily (guess which one he is?). There is also this undercurrent of genuine fear that fuels Emily and attraction to Reeve. First Touch excels in making even the mindfuckery sensual. I know I keep harping on how sexy this is, but well done erotica is so hard to come by these days. This is hands down, one of my favorite reads of 2016 and I am eagerly and anxiously excited for Last Touch.
