I received this book for free from in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
A knight in tarnished armor is still a knight.
When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that — that, I know how to do.
“I never realized that the downside of getting to know a woman before I screw her is the possibility that I might not want to screw her after I know her. That a personality could have such a devastating effect on desirability. It’s depressing. My whole worldview is blown to bits.”
It’s becoming a rarity for me to find a book that I can confidently rate 5 stars. Why? Honestly, I’m not sure. Maybe I’m becoming too picky. Maybe it’s because most stories start sounding similar. Either way, 5 star books are few and far between. But when I do find a 5 star? I scream it from the rooftops and Sustained by Emma Chase is not only a 5 star read, but my favorite book of the summer! Seriously, Jake is everything.
“Chelsea McQuaid is a fine piece of ass–but her nieces and nephews are turning out to be more of a distraction than she’s worth.”
Full disclosure time: This is going to be a fangirl heavy review. I try so hard to keep that part of myself to a minimum but there is no other way to express my love for everything this book is. Not only is Jake my favorite type of book boyfriend, but Chelsea and her nieces and nephews were the cherry on this literary sundae. I read this book in one sitting and then immediately re-read it. Jake is perfection with his inability to see easily and how strongly he falls in love. In fact, he is my favorite kind of hero; the one that struggles between his manwhore-ish ways and the role of surrogate father figure. That kind of hero is my kryptonite! Every interaction between Jake and the McQuaid orphans alternated between funny, sweet, and heartbreaking. I pretty much alternated between bouts of laughter, tears, and swooning.
“It was always going to end. Today, or a month, or six months from now–and it was never going to end well for her. I should have pulled away a long time ago.”
But what got me all warm and fuzzy was the relationship between Chelsea and Jake. OMG! Not only was it extremely hot (let’s be honest, Emma Chase writes some pretty awesome love scenes) but the romance was so epic! Especially the dynamic of Jake and Chelsea falling in love as they fell into these parental roles that neither asked for. It was one of those romances that I found myself so emotionally invested in and ultimately why Sustained is my favorite read of the summer. I almost can’t wait for my next re-read. It was that good!
